Chan’s BBQ – Stingray

A visit to Fengshan Food Centre and Market is never complete if you do not try Chan’s legendary BBQ stingray.

Chan’s BBQ shot to prominence began many years back when Channel U was running a TV programme called “Yummy King”. On the episode of BBQ seafood, Chan BBQ was voted number 1 by the public!

The secret to Chan’s BBQ Stingray success lies in its sambal chili sauce. While many other stalls use pre-made sambal chili sauces, Chan’s blends its own. Taste wise, the sambal chili sauce is smooth, nutty with a touch of hei bi (dried small prawn) flavor. Such savory goodness!

In terms of spiciness, this is definitely not for the faint hearted. Be sure you have a cup of ice cold drink to go along with your BBQ stingray to ease off some heat. And of course, eating in the sweltering heat of Singapore, be prepared to sweat, like a lot.

Unlike other stalls, Chan’s stingrays are often served in thick cuts. This allows the surface of the stingray to be nicely charred but yet keeping the inner meat succulent and juicy. Taking a bite into it only reaffirms that the Chan has indeed freshly sourced his stingrays.

Each plate of Stingray goes for S$10/S12/$14 depending on the size you require. But for a dining group of 4, go for the medium or large serving! That way you won’t have to fight over it!

Lastly, as a warning, due to the high volumes of customer Chan serves, be sure to wait at least 30 minutes. If need be, go earlier around 5.30pm to avoid the crowd!
